The Isle of Wight Gundog Club was founded on the
28th February 1979 at an inaugural meeting held at Calverts Hotel in
Newport. The first committee was formed by those attending that
first meeting and consisted of Mrs Enid Minter as Chairman, Mrs Jan
Drake as Secretary and a Mr Gray as Treasurer.
The name of the club was decided upon at that meeting and after the
next meeting held in March , it was decided to register the club
with the Kennel Club. It was not until December 1979 that the Kennel
Club gave their approval to the formation of the Isle of Wight
Gundog Club.
In the beginning Mrs Minter held ringcraft classes for those who
showed their dogs and trainers were appointed for obedience and
working training. The first AGM a year later saw 37 members
attending.
In 1985 at the AGM the Chairman, still Mrs Minter, talked of her
vision for the club running Opens Shows and Field Trials and perhaps
one day a Game Fair on the Island. In the same year the Club held
its first Novice Test which was won by Margaret Woods.
It wasn’t until 1988 that the Club saw its first Open Show.
1992 saw the Clubs first Field Trial, by now the Club was also
holding two working tests and a scurry, an open show and a limited
show each year.
The Club continued to grow and there were great achievements of
members in both working and show events.
Many Club events have taken place in the past which involved both
show and working enthusiasts. Fun days, training days, barbacues,
shows, trials, working tests and matches. Many of these activities
continue today. |
